S croll for a few seconds down your Facebook newsfeed and you’ll almost definitely come across at least one food video breaking down delicious looking recipes into millennial sized chunks for us all to chow down on. Perhaps the most prominent creator of this kind of content is Tasty (who have over 500 million monthly viewers), but there are many, many others.

Indeed the food and first-person cookin g video landscape on Facebook seems to us at Vrtue to represent a prime example of how 2d content is oversaturated on social media. With attention spans at an all time low and so much content on our newsfeeds competing for that sparse attention, it’s all too easy for those scrumptious culinary instructions to just pass us by. Our senses are overloaded by attractive images of ‘food porn’, our mouths water and our fingers click like, but we don’t learn how to cook. And we don’t really want that.

What we did next:

With Vrtue being who we are and doing what we do, we wondered whether the first person cooking video format would benefit from a little 360° makeover. And being a small venture ourselves we decided to opt against using content from one of the big boys.

We heard about Miso Tasty, an up-and-coming food brand producing pastes, soup kits and recipe kits all focused around the delicious Japanese superfood, Miso. Looking at Miso Tasty’s website it was clear they had an abundance of great content — fun, colourful recipe videos broken down clearly and simply.

However, as with any brief online recipe video, it can be difficult to keep track of ingredients and instructions during a timelapse in many cases under a minute long. Meanwhile ensuring that your product gets noticed in a crowded online marketplace, especially in the context of 2d media over-saturation discussed above, is always a challenge.

As we see it, 2d video itself as a medium is part of the problem here — it’s inherently fiddly to rewind and fast forward, perhaps most of all on a smartphone using just one finger. This is particularly problematic with something like a recipe that contains discrete steps and demands instructions be followed.

So, we decided to take a Miso Tasty recipe video from Youtube (their spicy glass noodles kit — check it out here, it looks amazing), and upgrade it into 360. This seemed to make particular sense to us given that Youtube is a platform already perfectly compatible with the 360 video format. Miso Tasty also use Facebook to distribute their products and videos, which as our previous articles explain is a platform that explicitly favours 360 video, both from a logistical and User Experience standpoint.

In line with our commitment to supercharging content without interfering with existing branding, we simple broke the original Youtube video into 5 separate clips, each representing one step of the recipe.

That’s the basics of Good Goliath, and honestly, it’s the vast majority of the gameplay. There are a few other little mechanics sprinkled throughout the levels, but you’ll mostly just be doing a bit of the old catch and release.

VR has come a long way since its inception. We’re long past basic tech demo-style experiences that show off the cool way you can use your hands in VR like catching objects and throwing them. Well, at least, that’s what I thought. Clearly, I’m wrong though because as much as Good Goliath has its moments, it rarely feels like more than a very basic demo of what VR can do.

Your hand movements are limited to moving them around and opening and closing them. Those are your interactions. For example, you can’t point; I know it’s an odd complaint, but come on, we can do better here. You just catch the things thrown at you and throw them back. Sometimes you catch a bowling ball, sometimes you catch a cannon, but there’s so little aside from the basic actions that it’s hard to even justify the differences.

Even your defensive options are very basic; you just make sure you move your head out of the way. It’s fine to have simple controls, but you can’t even move. The whole thing just feels a little bit bare-bones. The good news is that I’m pretty sure the character model is two disembodied Rayman hands and a big old beer belly, at least that’s what the shadows show.

It’s not that Good Goliath is bad, just that there isn’t much going on. I ended up finding my own entertainment in several levels. I tried catching every single halberd thrown at me in a flurry at one point, it went fairly well, but I did end up pulling a couple out of my chest. I also kept one of the knights I caught alive to slap him in the face occasionally and use him as a shield, that went a lot better.

My favorite thing to do was to catch a weapon thrown at me and then use it to strike the others out of the sky like Zorro. It didn’t advance the game at all, and there was no reward for doing so, but it was cool, and sometimes you have to make your own fun.

The one thing that is genuinely great in Good Goliath is the boss fights. Each one feels like the best kind of throwback to the classic era of video game bosses. You have multiple stages to work through with an ever-increasing number of things to dodge, weapons to catch, and trick shots to land. The game is never better than when you’re fighting some monstrous enemy, and that’s the case with the bosses.

The writing is also quite entertaining. The narrator does a good job of keeping your attention and has a wonderful tone of voice for this kind of work; he also does a good job when it comes to comedic timing, allowing for some funny, if somewhat predictable, story moments.

It’s entertaining, and it’s fun at points, but it’s all so very basic. The interactions don’t match up to those available in so many VR titles, and I don’t even mean Half-Life: Alyx, that would be an intensely unfair comparison. I mean other indie titles, the smaller ones. Good Goliath has been designed to be easy to play and good for new users, and it is, but that doesn’t necessarily mean things have to feel so sparse when it comes to the gameplay.

The moment to moment gameplay can often feel frustrating as you simply duck and dodge incoming objects and throw them back, but in the boss fights it gives you a glimpse of the technical skill and excellent design that the team is capable of. If Good Goliath had been a boss rush only game it would be far easier to recommend, but it’s sadly just a little too limited to be worth your time if you’ve played much else in VR.

The PSVR is a fascinating piece of tech. Over the last few years, it has evolved into a multifaceted device offering tons of entertainment options. One need only look at titles such as Moss and Ghost Giant for its emotional narrative-driven experiences or Beat Saber for its arcadey fun experiences. Good Goliath attempts to offer the second category. Unfortunately, with all the experiences the PlayStation store offers, Good Goliath fails to make a punch.

What is Good, Goliath?

Good Goliath has a fairly simple idea. You are the titular “Goliath” being antagonized by nasty villagers, egotistical kings, almighty sea creatures, and more. In it, you are sat stationary in one position as things are thrown at you. You must then turn this on its head by grabbing them out of the air and flinging them back at their source. The story starts off in a lovely storybook style. You sit in the dark as a booming voice introduces you to the game. The villagers have tied you up in their town square as you are burned at the stake. Not content with this, they have also decided to throw spears, bombs, and cakes(?) at you.

This brings one to the central gameplay loop. Each level is designed around some key ideas. The first is a town hall. In this town hall, it is surrounded by houses and a shop, all of which offer a satisfying level of destructibility. You can use the villager’s pitchforks against them or use them to hit targets around the area. These can award health, more points, or some secrets. You control the two giant hands with your move controllers, each with an open palm and clenched fist activated with the trigger. For the most part, this is all the gameplay system. There are slight changes in the way certain objects are thrown or the tactics for bosses, but this is the majority of what you do in Good Goliath.

How are the levels in Good Goliath?

Most areas contain a set of levels. These levels often involve a major unit that you have to deal with. Things such as legions of pitchfork using villagers or lance throwing knights change up the way you see the level. This moves one to the second major control you have in Good Goliath. I have, on multiple occasions, wished there was more to keep me interested. Due to PSVR only really operating well with certain axes, some targets and enemies become annoyingly hard to hit.

Verdict: The appeal of Good Goliath is obviously from the get-go. It attempts to offer arcadey fun, possibly to be had with friends as was so popular at the start of PSVR’s life cycle. Unfortunately, due to the lack of change throughout levels and the sometimes frustrating controls, It is hard to see something in Good Goliath that isn’t offered elsewhere. There are many launch titles from almost four years ago that do similar things better.
