Dead by Daylight crossplay – how to add friends cross-platform, mobile crossplay, and more

Everything you need to know about crossplay in Dead by Daylight

Dead by Daylight – Behaviour Interactive’s massively popular survival horror game – sees four ‘survivors’ desperately attempt to escape from one of over 20 different killers over the course of a game.

While the solo experience is all well and good, playing Dead by Daylight with friends is – for us anyway – the most fun way to experience the game. In 2020, BHVR finally introduced the ability to play with friends cross-platform thanks to crossplay – a feature that had been on the wishlists of many players for quite some time.

Thanks to this, you can now take on the role of either a survivor or the killer themselves, as you flee from or hunt down your friends – be they on PC or console. But how do you add your friends cross-platform in the first place? Can you play with your friends on mobile? And how do you turn crossplay off if you want to queue as a solo against other players on your chosen platform only? Fortunately, we have the answers on Dead by Daylight crossplay for you right here.

Here’s all the details on Dead by Daylight crossplay.

Is Dead by Daylight crossplay?

Dead by Daylight received full crossplay support across PC and console in August 2020. BHVR also plans to add further support when the Stadia version of Dead by Daylight launches later this year.

We’re super excited to announce that Cross-Play & Cross-Friends are now available on PC and Consoles. For more information: https://t.co/ivO7zdTDMc

How to add friends on Dead by Daylight cross-platform

Dead by Daylight currently lets you play with friends on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and the Microsoft Store. You can add your Dead by Daylight friends in just a few simple steps:

  • Open up your friends list
  • Click the friend icon+ in the top right corner of the list
  • Type in the full username of your friend, including the four digit hashtag (this can be found in the top left corner of the list)
  • Click ‘invite a friend’ to send them a request
  • Once accepted, you’re good to go

Dead by Daylight mobile crossplay

Dead by Daylight currently has limited cross-platform support for mobile. This means that, while Android and iOS players can play together, they can’t play with friends on PC or console.

How to communicate with friends cross-platform on Dead by Daylight

As in-game communication is handled by each platform’s online service (PSN, Xbox Live, etc.), we recommend a third-party program like Discord, which can be installed on both PC and mobile devices.

Once Discord is installed, you can add your friends to a private call, or even create a dedicated server where you can all plot your next Dead by Daylight session.

How to turn off Dead by Daylight crossplay

If you only want to queue up against players on your chosen platform, you can turn off crossplay by simply heading into your settings, making your way down to the ‘Online’ category, and unchecking the ‘cross-play’ option.

We’d recommend keeping crossplay turned on, however, as limiting the pool of players you can play with will have a pretty sizable effect on your queue times. So be warned.

That’s all we have for you for now. As always, should BHVR add further support or change how crossplay works, we’ll be sure to keep you updated right here.

Breaking Barriers with Cross-Play and Cross-Progression

Update: We are continuing to work on making Nintendo Switch Cross-Progression available — we’ll have news to share soon.

As mentioned during the anniversary livestream, we are planning to add the Cross-Play feature into Dead by Daylight. As it is a topic widely discussed in the community, we are here to provide you with more clarity on our vision regarding Cross-Play / Cross-Friends and Cross Progression.

Dead by Daylight is now available on multiple platforms and soon Stadia will join that line up. While a few years ago it was impossible to imagine that Cross-Play could be a thing in video games, it now seems a logical choice for us. Our aim has always been to make sure players can play together as a fully connected community, and today we are excited to share more about that plan.

Cross-Play and Cross-Friends

Ten months ago, we introduced Cross-Play on PC with the release of the game on the Windows Store. Cross-play was already on our minds even before this release and thus linking these two platforms together came naturally. Cross-Play went live a few days after the release of the Windows Store, greatly improving the player’s experience.

But that was only the beginning, as the following two topics were listed as the most requested by the community:

  • Play with my friends from other platforms (Cross-Friends)
  • Cross-Progression

In theory, Cross-friends, a feature to add players from a platform to another was a matter of production efforts. Cross-Friends is now live on Windows Store & Steam as a beta test and, so far, we are receiving amazing feedback.

However, we wanted to make sure that the Cross-Play aspect of that feature would not impact the general player’s experience. We knew players would ask about Balancing, Matchmaking time, Network communications, etc. We investigated our data, ran playtests, and gathered feedback and we are now confident moving forward with the release of Cross-Play on console.

Now that all lights are green, we are preparing the activation of Cross-Play and Cross-Friends on consoles. In this scenario, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players will be able to play together, and with people on PC. We are polishing the last details to make sure that it will only impact our game positively. As we are still monitoring the situation and numbers on PC, we cannot give you a specific date for now, but we can definitely say it is coming really soon! (like before the first snow, in Montreal (hopefully))

Once Cross-Play is live on all platforms, we will carefully monitor the data to ensure the stability of the game. If it becomes unstable, we will disable cross-play to allow us to work on a fix. Player experience first!!

Players will have the choice to opt-out of Cross-Play if they prefer.

We have seen a lot of questions about potential Cross-Play with Dead by Daylight Mobile, for now, this is not part of our plan. The game system and architecture are significantly different. We are prioritizing the release of cross-play between PC & Consoles first to make sure that the experience is smooth for the players on those platforms.

Cross Progression

Allowing players to team up with their friends from other platforms was the first step to break barriers between platforms. We know that some of our players are active on several platforms, and Cross-Progression is also one of the top wishes from our community.

We are thrilled to announce that we are preparing the first steps toward Cross-Progression and that it will be available for Steam, Google Stadia and Nintendo Switch in September! Players will be able to share their progression, purchases, and inventory on those 3 platforms – Exceptions might have to be made to accommodate for some external licensing needs.

As of today, we cannot make Cross-Progression available on other platforms and we have no guarantee that it will happen. However, we know that this is a community wish, and we will keep trying to make it happen.

How will Cross-Progression work?

Merging several years of game progression of millions of players is a technical challenge that few games are trying to tackle.

We spent lots of time preparing and discussing the best way to provide Cross-Progression to our players. We want to make sure the transition will be smooth and that we protect our player’s progression.

In order to achieve a good transition, we had to build a brand new ecosystem. Players will have to create a Behaviour Account to link their progression, so our server can merge it.

All our efforts will be focused on monitoring account merging to ensure that players will not have any issue during that complex process.

Thanks for reading! we are super excited to read your comments. Many people on the team are working hard to transform that vision into something that you will experience as soon as possible with your keyboard / controller. We hope this article gave your more clarification about the future of Dead by Daylight!

Is Dead By Daylight Crossplay & Cross Progression Supported? – Supported Consoles Guide

You can kill or be killed, but can you do it with your friends?

Dead By Daylight crossplay ought to be a no-brainer. The tense multiplayer game blurs the line between competitive and cooperative play — forcing teams of survivors to juke terrifying monsters and killers. With such a diverse range of characters, and different ways to play, you’d want to let as many people play together as possible. Right? While that may be the case, it’s no promise that players on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation can join together. That’s why we’re here with a look at crossplay in Dead By Daylight! Does the horrific hunting game break down the walls between fans? Let’s find out!

Does Dead By Daylight Have Crossplay Support?

The answer is… kind of complicated. The waters are muddied by the existence of multiple storefronts that sell Dead By Daylight. The game is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and even Nintendo Switch. There’s even a mobile version on iOS and Android now.

PC players, however, have to make a choice between buying Dead By Daylight on Steam or through the Windows Store. And originally those two player bases could not match with one another, despite being on (more-or-less) the same hardware. Developer Behaviour Interactive rectified that issue in late 2019, however. The team opened up a limited version of Dead By Daylight crossplay for that platform specifically — allowing all PC players to, well, play together.

After testing this feature out, Behavior has brought cross play (Windows Store to Steam) and cross-friends (cross-platform) to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. This means all four platforms can finally play together.

This does not apply to the newer mobile version of the game and there are no plans to add it. If you’re on a phone, you can’t play with someone on a console or PC. The good news is there’s at least crossplay between iPhones and Android devices. As long as you and a friend are on mobile, you can play together.

Dead by Daylight Cross Progression Support

Brace yourselves for some more bad news depending on which platforms you play on. Behavior Interactive is indeed adding cross progression support, letting you keep your progress across multiple platforms. The bad news? Cross progression is only coming to Steam, Google Stadia, and Nintendo Switch in September.

You will soon be able to share your progression, purchases, and inventory on those three platforms though Behavior warns there may be some exceptions due to licensing.

The developers don’t rule out cross progression coming to other platforms but say they can’t make it happen as of today and will keep trying to make it a reality.

To enable cross progression, you’ll need to link your Behavior account on all three platforms. If there’s an update and one console gets patched late, crossplay will be temporarily disabled until the versions are the same again.

If you want to deactivate crossplay simply go to Settings > Disable Cross-Platform Play.

Why No Cross Progression on Xbox and PS4?

Our best guess is it’s a licensing issue with the Xbox and PlayStation store fronts. Sony and Microsoft likely don’t want to sacrifice all of those potential purchases. Destiny 2 had a similar problem. While in game purchases like cosmetics and season passes were fair game, externally purchased expansions were a no go. Players who wanted cross progression were forced to purchase the expansions on all three platforms.

The State of Crossplay and Cross Platform Support

Crossplay support only gets more popular with time! Odds are that it will be the norm before too long. Until then, though, the vast majority of cross platform multiplayer games don’t fully include it. When they do, it’s often restricted to players on one console playing with those on PC. Microsoft and Sony seem to view the PC as neutral ground.

Microsoft in particular has extra incentive in the form of its “play anywhere policy.” Typically, if you buy a digital copy of a Microsoft first-party exclusive, you get to own it both on Xbox and PC — free of additional charge. At that point there’s really no reason not to let folks play together. Throw in services like Xbox Game Pass (which is now on PC) and things get even easier.

Sony has historically taken pretty much the opposite approach. The company is far and away the sales leader on this generation of consoles. That incentivizes it not to play well with others — or allow its partner studios to do so on its hardware. In addition, Sony first-party exclusives basically never come out on PC. It’s PlayStation or nothing. Although there are a number of third-party games only available on PlayStation and PC that do feature crossplay (e.g. Final Fantasy XIV).

Even so, Sony has announced its crossplay solution has exited “beta” and should be freely available to all. There are also rumors that PS4 exclusives like Horizon: Zero Dawn are on their way to PC, lifting even more walls that have traditionally kept the manufacturer separated from its peers.

Fortnite managed to push the envelope a bit by virtue of being one of the biggest games on the planet. Developer Epic Games also pushed the issue when it “accidentally” turned on Fortnite crossplay for a short time — thereby proving it wasn’t a technical limitation. That sparked a conversation around crossplay games over the entire industry. But while Sony has said it is “open for business” when it comes to cross platform play, many developers say otherwise (both publicly and privately).

Speaking of some of the biggest games in the world, Minecraft is another strange case. Microsoft purchased the franchise from fictional character Hatsune Miku in 2014. But Minecraft, of course, was already on every platform under the sun. That included Sony and Nintendo hardware. Microsoft and Nintendo have seemingly played nice ever since.

The “technical limitation” argument does hold some water, however. Many current and even upcoming games were built with the assumption that crossplay would not be an option. Some studios have the resources, time, and/or singular focus to get around that. Others do not. With the present state of crossplay, however, it’s very difficult to imagine it not becoming the norm at a technical and policy level. If we get to the next generation of console hardware without crossplay being the norm, then you know we have a problem…

Dead By Daylight Cross-Progression Explained For PC, Console & Nintendo Switch Players

What is the current state of cross-progression with Dead By Daylight in 2021?

If you’ve come to this page you’re no doubt wondering, does Dead by Daylight support cross-progression?

Well, the answer is fairly complicated, but bluntly, the developer Behaviour Interactive does support cross-progression, just not with every platform at the time of writing.

For those of you who don’t know, here’s a really quick explanation of what cross-progression actually means:

Cross-Progression allows you to synchronize your game progression and your inventory (DLCs, purchases, skins) on several platforms.

So it’s a handy feature to ensure that all your game progress and purchased content is available to you, regardless of what platform you’re playing on.

Now we know what it is, lets break down how it works, how you set it up and what platforms it currently works for.

Does Dead By Daylight Support Cross-Progression On PlayStation (PS4/PS5) and Xbox?

At the time of writing, there are no cross-progression features for PlayStation (PS4/PS5) or Xbox consoles.

So that also means it doesn’t work with PC, Nintendo Switch or Google Stadia.

If you’ve been playing on console and have purchased content on console, that’s the only place you can access it.

In August 2020, Behaviour Interactive did bring PC and console players together with the addition of Cross-Play, but there’s been no word on when cross-progression could arrive.

The only official word from Behaviour Interactive on the state of cross-progression for console — made in July 2020 — is this:

“As of today, we cannot make Cross-Progression available on other platforms and we have no guarantee that it will happen. However, we know that this is a community wish, and we will keep trying to make it happen”

A Tweet from the official Twitter account in 2021, also referred to other platforms as «still up in the air.»

Does Dead By Daylight Support Cross-Progression On Nintendo Switch?

Again, another tricky one to answer because cross-progression for Nintendo Switch was meant to be live as of September 2020.

Dataminers did notice that internal code referenced Nintendo Switch cross-progression back in January 2021. Then in May 2021, the official Twitter account told a fan that cross-progression is coming to the Switch «in the near future».

But even at the time of writing, we’ve still no official word on exactly when it could arrive.

What Platforms Support Dead By Daylight Cross-Progression?

At the time of writing Cross-Progression for Dead By Daylight is available for players on Steam and Google Stadia platforms. But as we mention, the team are always exploring the possibility of adding more platforms, however, sometimes it’s not always the developer’s decision.

How To Set Up Dead By Daylight Cross-Progression?

If you want to enable Dead By Daylight cross-progression, it couldn’t be any simpler.

Essentially all you need to do is link a Behavior account to your Steam or Google Stadia account. For those wondering you cannot link more than one account from the same platform? (i.e. you can’t link 2 Steam accounts).

But that’s it, it’s a quick job and if you run into any problems linking your accounts, it’s likely because the account information you have entered is incorrect or because the platform’s website is down.

Behaviour suggests you contact the support accounts from the platform you are trying to link, or check out the Dead By Daylight forums for more info if you still have questions.

Can You Disable Dead By Daylight Cross-Progression Or Unlink Accounts?

Yes, although there are repercussions, as explained by Behaviour Interactive, just below:

If you unlink an account after it has been merged, all progress and purchases will be set to the state it was before the merge, potentially causing a loss of progress / virtual goods on that platform. When you unlink your platform account from your Behaviour Account, you’ll have to wait 60 days to link a new platform account (of the same platform) to your Behaviour Account. You will also have to wait 60 days to link that platform account to another Behaviour Account.

In addition, the developer also outlined what progress you keep and what you lose if you unlink an account:

When you unlink your platform account from your Behaviour account, your unlocked items, perks, characters, character levels, and player level will be returned to the platform account in the same state as when the account was originally linked. Any remaining auric cells purchased on that platform since linking, or items purchased using auric cells, will also be returned to the platform account. Bloodpoints, Iridescent Shards, and Auric Cells unlocked through gameplay will remain on the Behaviour account. Any unlocked characters that were transferred to the unlinked platform account will be unavailable to the Behaviour account (unless repurchased). If unlinking the account would leave the Behaviour account with NO remaining platform accounts, then all Bloodpoints, Iridescent Shards, and Auric Cells remaining on the Behaviour account will be granted to the final platform account that was unlinked.

Dead by Daylight Cross-Platform Support — What to Know About Crossplay

Dead by Daylight cross-platform support became a frequent discussion point a good few years ago, given how the asymmetrical horror title made its way to multiple platforms after debuting on PC. As several other multi-platform releases have shown, crossplay comes with its share of benefits, especially in multiplayer-only games.

Dead by Daylight crossplay would essentially perform the role of bridging the gap between the different platforms, enabling players to enter the Fog alongside others without being limited by their hardware or the ecosystem it belongs to. Cross-platform support also has the potential to reduce matchmaking times, which is something very desirable in multiplayer games.

Dead by Daylight Crosslay and Cross-Platform Support

Dead by Daylight crossplay took a while to arrive to all of the game’s platforms. It initially deployed on PC, between Steam and the Microsoft Store, after which it made its way to both console and mobile.

As of August 13, 2020, anyone picking up the game on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch should have no problem playing with or against horror enthusiasts on the other mentioned platforms.

You can also opt out of Dead by Daylight cross-platform support from the game’s settings, if you ever feel like taking a break from the feature, although this may result in longer matchmaking times.

Dead by Daylight’s mobile version also features crossplay but it only stretches across iOS and Android devices.

This means that mobile players cannot join the same matches as those on other platforms. It makes sense, too, when you take into account the differences between the mobile version and its PC/console counterpart.

Dead by Daylight is out now on PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. The game will also be free on the Epic Games Store during the week of December 2, which should see a new influx of players joining the ranks of Killers and Survivors.

Something New

Dead By Daylight Adding Crossplay and Cross-Progression In Update

Dead by Daylight’s development team shares plans to enable cross-play and cross-friends feature between PC and consoles in the near future.

Dead by Daylight devs are about to unite the game’s audiences scattered across several platforms by adding crossplay and cross-progression support in an upcoming update. For a 6-year-old title with a massive community, this is a logical step in providing additional comfort of experiencing the game.

Dead by Daylight initially released on PC via Steam back in 2016 as an asymmetrical multiplayer horror game, which was warmly welcomed by the gaming community. The title then successfully expanded over on all of the relevant platforms in the course of several years with a Stadia port expected to launch this September. Apart from obvious existing console versions, there’re even mobile ports of Dead by Daylight, which means that the title effectively covers all of the potential gaming audiences. Sadly, these audiences are all stuck in their separate ecosystems limited by their platforms of choice, but this situation is expected to change soon.

The detailed plan regarding crossplay support in Dead by Daylight was shared by the development team in an official blog post. It is worth mentioning that the title released on Windows Store almost a year ago, and it was shortly followed by a crossplay feature between Windows Store and Steam. This time, however, developers are about to make a significant step further by enabling crossplay and cross-friends support on consoles. Once the update goes live, players will be able to join combined matchmaking pools and invite their friends from across PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. Cross-progression, however, is a bit trickier since it requires to transfer both character progression and account purchases across different platforms. Developers cannot guarantee that the feature will ever work on all consoles, which leaves cross-progression for Steam, Google Stadia, and Nintendo Switch for the time being.

As clarified in the blog post, the development team researched gaming data and ran testing sessions to make sure that the upcoming cross-play update wouldn’t negatively affect loading times or any other aspects of playing Dead by Daylight. Additionally, players will be granted an option to disable crossplay if they choose to when the update goes live, although there’s no exact launch date. That being said, cross-play between major platforms and mobiles is not being currently considered as that would require an enormous amount of work since mobile versions of Dead by Daylight have a different architecture.

Given that crossplay has become a highly requested feature for multiplatform video games, it was a matter of time until Dead by Daylight would adopt it. Judging by examples of several huge titles, including Rocket League and Fortnite, cross-play is the healthiest way for multiplayer online games to evolve and maintain their communities. There’re little to no downsides in enabling cross-play, which basically means that Dead by Daylight along with its loyal fans will hugely benefit from the upcoming update.
