The Mobile Action Games Company

The best upcoming Android games: Action, racing, strategy, and more

Mobile games have really come into their own in recent years, with tons of great new games released each and every month. The only issue is that the Google Play Store is still a mess, so finding upcoming Android games can be an absolute nightmare.

To help, we put together this list of the 15 best upcoming Android games, in categories like adventure, action, racing, and more. Have a look and get ready to mark your calendars!

Best upcoming Android games:

  1. Dauntless
  2. Total War: Warhammer
  3. Plants vs. Zombies 3
  4. Valorant
  5. Rocket League Sideswipe
  6. Clash Quest
  7. Pokémon Unite
  8. Final Fantasy Pixel
  1. Apex Legends
  2. Pokémon Sleep
  3. H1Z1
  4. Townscaper
  5. Diablo Immortal
  6. Path of Exile Mobile
  7. Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier

Editor’s note: We’ll update this list of upcoming Android games as new games are announced and others are officially released.

1. Dauntless

Dauntless is a free-to-play co-op action RPG that’s currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Developer Phoenix Labs has said the mobile version of the game is currently in the early concept phase, but has not provided an exact timeframe for when it will be released.

In fact, mobile development was temporarily put on the backburner in 2019. However, according to a recent interview with Lead Product Manager Hans Reifenrath, the company is still committed to releasing Dauntless on mobile sometime in the future.

In Dauntless, you step into the shoes of a slayer, and your job is to take down monsters knows as behemoths. You can hunt solo or team up with up to three other slayers. With every kill, you get crafting materials that you can then use to make weapons to take on even scarier monsters.

Like the console and PC versions, Dauntless on Android will likely be a free-to-play title that requires a constant internet connection.

2. Total War Battles: Warhammer

Mobile RTS games have been pretty weak historically, but this upcoming Android game comes from one of the biggest franchises in the genre: Total War. Like the latest PC releases, this one is based in the Warhammer universe, so expect to see dwarves, high elves, skaven, and more.

It’s worth noting that although it matches the universe, it isn’t being developed by Creative Assembly. Instead, seasoned mobile developer NetEase is spearheading the effort. This should give the game better optimization for mobile devices, but may mean it includes some controversial elements like stamina and premium currencies.

We still don’t know too much about this one, but the official website says a closed beta is coming soon. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

3. Plants vs. Zombies 3

A new game in the Plants vs. Zombies series is coming to Android. It’s called Plants vs. Zombies 3, and unlike previous titles, this one is playable in portrait mode in order to enable more mobile-friendly one-handed play.

If you somehow have never heard of it, Plants vs. Zombies is basically an action-strategy game in which you take on big and bad zombies with your army of plants, each of which has its own unique offensive or defensive capabilities. PvZ 3 will abandon the iconic 2D graphics for full 3D models, but it will maintain the same overall aesthetic.

The game is a free-to-play title with microtransactions, and it was briefly soft-launched toward the end of 2020. However, the developer later pulled it from the Play Store to incorporate player feedback. That’s not always a great sign, but it hasn’t been canceled, so we still count it among the most anticipated upcoming Android games this year.

4. Valorant

Riot’s hit first-person shooter Valorant made a big splash when it launched on PC in 2020, and at the one-year celebration event the company announced that the game is now coming to mobile.

For now, we’re pretty light on details. We know that the game will have some tweaks to make it more mobile-friendly (which Riot successfully achieved with Wild Rift) and that there will be no cross-play with PC. As for a release date, the developers have stated that it’s coming sometime in year two, so likely an early 2022 release.

5. Rocket League Sideswipe

Fans of the competitive car/soccer game Rocket League will be happy to learn about the next upcoming Android game on the list: Rocket League Sideswipe. Build from the ground up for mobile devices, it brings the same formula to a much more mobile-friendly format with two-minute matches.

What’s more, you won’t have to wait long to try it. The game went through a limited alpha test earlier this year, with a full global release planned for later in 2021. Stay tuned to the official website for more details about upcoming beta tests in more regions around the world.

6. Clash Quest

Supercell’s Clash universe (Clash Royale, Clash of Clans) is one of the most popular series in mobile gaming history, and now the company is expanding its offerings with three additional games: Clash Quest, Clash Mini, and Clash Heroes. Each is being developed by a different team within the company, but if we know anything about Supercell it’s that the company’s games always feature an incredible level of polish.

The games all fall into different genres. Clash Quest is a single-player strategy game with elements of the match-three genre. Clash Mini, as the name implies, is a kind of board game within the Clash universe that appears to be similar to auto-battlers like Auto Chess and Teamfight Tactics. The final game, Clash Heroes, is a co-op action RPG.

All of these titles are still early in development, so there’s no word yet on official release dates. Still, considering Supercell’s incredible pedigree, these are some of the most exciting upcoming Android games to watch out for.

7. Pokémon Unite

One of the last things fans expected from the June 24, 2020 Pokémon Presents was a Pokémon mobile MOBA game, but that’s just what they got in Pokémon Unite. The game lets you take direct control of some of your favorite Pokémon in a 5vs5 arena battle.

The standard MOBA formula has been somewhat adapted for Pokémon, with gameplay that favors capturing wild Pokémon and depositing them in certain zones to get points. There are two lanes instead of three and no turrets, but apart from that gameplay appears very similar to popular MOBAs like League of Legends or Dota 2.

The game is being developed by Tencent’s heavy-hitter team at Timi studios, which has previously worked on two of the most popular games around: PUBG Mobile and COD Mobile. The game launched on the Nintendo Switch in July, with an iOS and Android release in September.

8. Final Fantasy Pixel

E3 2021 didn’t have too much in the way of upcoming Android game announcements, but Square Enix did feature one surprise announcement: Final Fantasy Pixel.

This is essentially a remaster of the first six Final Fantasy titles, exclusively for mobile devices. Notably, this is the first time that the original version of Final Fantasy III is being ported over into English.

As of writing, the first three Final Fantasy remasters are already available on the Google Play Store, with the following three still upcoming. They aren’t cheap, but it’s still a fun way to experience the origins of one of the most popular JRPG series of all time.

9. Apex Legends

While news about a mobile version of Apex Legends has been few and far between lately, we know for sure that Respawn Entertainment’s hit battle royale title is coming to mobile devices soon. Shortly after the game’s original release, devs confirmed that a mobile version is in the works.

EA remained silent after that until April of 2021. The game is currently in closed beta in the Philippines and India, so users in those regions can try it out right away. It’s been redesigned for mobile from the ground up, which means touch controls and other optimizations. Unfortunately, this also means it won’t be capable of cross-platform play with PC or console.
